Activision has announced the purchase of Digital Legends, a mobile game developer based in Barcelona. In this way, the Catalan team joins the growing list of internal studios of the American company and, like all of them, works on the Call of Duty franchise. Specifically, Digital Legends is involved in the development of a new mobile title that has not yet been revealed. The amount of the operation has not been disclosed.
For Activision and its president Rob Kostich, “Digital Legends is an incredible team of development professionals” and the purchase represents “a great step forward” in their strategy of building resources focused on creating innovative content for players. For his part, Chris Plummer, head of Activision’s mobile division, highlighted the collaboration that has existed over the last year between Digital Legends and the other Activision teams. From Digital Legends they have been very satisfied with their incorporation into the company.
Digital Legends will provide Activision with a team with a long experience in the development of mobile games, a market in which they have been competing since 2006. It is true that the company was founded by Xavier Carrillo, Ángel Cuñado, and Jean-Philippe Raynaud in 2001 after leaving Rebel Act Studios, but during their early years, they tried to make a PC game by building on their experience in Blade: The Edge of Darkness. It could not be, but they were rescued by Nokia when it saw what they could do with N-Gage, the console for which they developed the fighting game One.
For the last several years Digital Legends has focused on the development of shooters’ third-person multiplayer such as Respawnables and Afterpulse, but also has experience in shooters in the first person since it was the team responsible for bringing Battlefield Bad Company 2 to mobile. Now Digital Legends will work together with Solid State, a newly created Activision internal studio that, together with Beenox and Activision Shanghai, are putting out a Call of Duty mobile installment of which nothing is known yet.
Activision currently has about 2,000 employees working on games in the Call of Duty series. The development of Call of Duty Vanguard is led by Sledgehammer Games, while Treyarch is in charge of the zombie mode and Raven Software of Warzone. All three are supported by Demonware, Beenox, Activision Shanghai, High Moon Studios, and Toys for Bob. Lastly, Infinity Ward is believed to be working on the next major installment in the series.
