Antarctica will mark the new season of Overwatch 2

Since the release of Overwatch 2, Activision Blizzard has only introduced one new map: Shambali Monastery. However, ahead of the third season of the shooter, the developer wants to radically change the content approach. Instead of putting all the spotlights around a new hero – something it has recently done with Ramattra – the company wants everything to revolve around a map. That will be the case with Antarctica, the last great novelty of the saga.

Antarctica will come to Overwatch 2 as its new map, focusing on the control mode. After a dynamic marked by having locations scattered throughout different countries of the world, Activision Blizzard will make players travel to one of the two poles. The Antarctic continent will be the sixth control map, since OW2 currently has Busan, Ilios, Lijiang Tower, Nepal and Oasis in this modality. Therefore, it will be a place where the teams must defend a point to get ahead on the scoreboard.

The great novelty of Antarctica is that it will have three locations: an icebreaker ship, a mining area, laboratories and a mining area. The presence of these three elements is not a coincidence, but a decision made on purpose by Activision Blizzard. With the new map the developer wants to expand the lore of Overwatch, specifically around Mei. In the animated short Good morning! the company showed the story of Mei: a researcher who was left alone after the entire scientific base was frozen.

Mei was a scientist at Ecopoint, a research section of Overwatch. After a normal day, the team went to cryogenicize. However, technical problems left the heroine alone, something that was coupled with the dissolution of the command. A priori the ship would correspond to Overwatch’s attempt to rescue the scientist after receiving Winston’s message. OW2 is currently squeezing the last days of the second season, which ends on February 7.
