Arkane will remove the restriction to always play Redfall online

There are some features of game desEsports Extrasthat the community has never liked. Microtransactions and loot boxes have long been the most notable, but as we move closer to a more online-focused gaming industry, developers have started to make their games need to be always connected to the internet, and the Players don’t like this feature.

Especially when a game is entirely single player, or can be played entirely solo, as is the case with Redfall, from arkane. Since it was announced that the game will require a constant online connection, fans have been uproarious, and Arkane has taken those criticisms into account and announced that is working on reversing to this decision.

As reported by Eurogamer, the game’s director, harvey smith, has addressed this issue, stating, “There are two ways developers could react to that, right? They could say, ‘My God, you’re always online. If you go into Steam and it’s not online, you become crazy. If you go into your Xbox and you can’t get the latest patch or see what your friends are doing, you go crazy. You want to always be connected.” But I think that response lacks empathy.

“There are people who live in places where there are outages or their broadband sucks, or they compete with their relatives because their mom is watching a movie or their brother is on another device. So I think that’s a legitimate criticism.”

“We take it very empathetically. We listen. And we’ve already started working to address this issue in the future. We have a few things to do, like encrypt save games and work on the UI. I can’t promise anything, but we’re actively working to fix it in the future.”

According to Smith, the reason Redfall needed to go online has to do with accessibility and telemetry, which allows Arkane to see where players are struggling the most and what needs to be addressed first.

There’s just over a month to go until the Redfall visit, but if you want to get first-hand information about what the game is like, you can already take a look at our final impressions.
