Packaging and Accessories

The ASRock X670E Steel Legend elegant cardboard box that combines shades of black and white to decorate it, showing its main characteristics and technical specifications on the reverse.

As usual in the brand, we find the motherboard surrounded by a foam frame inside an antistatic bag, leaving the accessories on a second level.

ASRock X670E Steel Legend - Accessories

In addition to documentation, the accessory kit includes a GPU mount, a Wi-Fi antenna, two velcro cable organizers, two SATA cables in case you’re still using a traditional drive, a keycap to match the aesthetics of the motherboard and some screws for the M.2 drives.

DesEsports Extrasand Connections

ASRock X670E Steel Legend - Front View

After removing it from its packaging, we began the review of the ASRock X670E Steel Legend to see how it offers a similar desEsports Extrasto the previous generation, combining a black PCB with silver and white details on the heatsinks.

Upper area

Focusing first on the upper area, we find ourselves before the new AM5 socket, the great novelty of this generation of motherboards that supports processors AMD Ryzen 7000. As is evident, a format has been chosen LGA a instead of the traditional PGA used by AMD, with a desEsports Extrasvery similar to the one used by Intel for many years. However, the heatsink mounting system is the same as the previous generation, so all AM4 compatible heatsinks and liquid coolers are also compatible for the new AM5 processors.

ASRock X670E Steel Legend - VRM

Under a pair of aluminum heatsinks, we find a powerful VRM made up of 16+2+1 power supply phases of 60A designed by Dr.MOS with SPS (Smart Power Stage) technology. It is optimized to monitor the current and temperature of each phase to smoothly and accurately deliver power to the CPU, drawing power from a pair of 8-pin ATX/EPS connectors.

Sticker memories with BIOS boot time

A detail that was leaked a few weeks before the launch, and that we see in the form of a sticker, is the notice that the first computer boot can take up to 400 seconds if we use 4 memory modules, or about 100 seconds if we “only” use 2 modules. This can cause us a good scare and a lot of impatience to know that everything works fine, but the truth is that once we update the BIOS, the boot will not be so long, even after clearing the CMOS.

ASRock X670E Steel Legend - DDR5

We remove the sticker and we find 4 DIMM slots for DDR5 memory with support for dual-channel and with capacity for up to 128 GB of memory. The base frequency of the memories is 5,200 MHz, although according to specifications, we can exceed 6,600 MHz without too many problems.

Taking advantage of the previous image, we can see how, together with the classic 24-pin ATX connector for powering the motherboard, we have a USB 3.2 Gen1 header and a USB-C 3.2 Gen2x2 header up to 20 Gbps, as well as 4 small LEDs that indicate the boot status, two connectors for RGB LED strips and two connectors for PWM fans.

Lower zone

We now focus on the lower area of the motherboard, where we find a new PCIe 5.0 x16 slot too modern for today’s charts, which still don’t use that interface. In addition, we have another PCIe 3.0 x16 slot running at x4 and a PCIe 3.0 x1.

For the storage section we have a M.2 PCIe Gen5x4 slot of up to 128 Gbps, this time it can be used with the new units, although they reach the market with a fairly high price. We also have other 3 M.2 PCIe Gen4x4 slots up to 64 Gbps and, of course, 4 SATA III ports up to 6 Gbps on the right side.

Review ASRock X670E Steel Legend Fairing rear connectors

Fixed to one of the VRM heatsinks we have already placed the protector of the rear ports, improving the aesthetics of the area by fairing it.

Review ASRock X670E Steel Legend Rear Connectors

Already from the back, we can see how we have the following connectors:

  • HDMI 2.1 and DisplayPort 1.4 video outputs
  • Wi-Fi antennas
  • BIOS Flashback Button
  • 4 USB 2.0 ports
  • 6 USB 3.2 Gen1 ports (10Gbps, blue)
  • 1 USB-C 3.2 Gen2x2 port (20Gbps)
  • 2 x RJ-45 (2.5GbE/GbE)
  • 2 x jacks (Headphones and microphone)
  • SPDIF (optical digital audio)

We must highlight the generous and powerful variety of USB ports offered by this motherboard, crowned by the USB-C 3.2 Gen2x2 capable of reaching 20 Gbps. Equally notable are the network options with a combo of Dragon RTL8125BG 2.5GbE cards Y Realtek RTL8111 GbE for wired networks and a WiFi 6E that allows the maximum speed wireless connection.

On the other hand, we have HDMI 2.1 and DisplayPort 1.4 video outputs to give life to the integrated GPU in the new AMD Ryzen 7000 processors, as well as “only” two jack connectors for headphones/speakers and microphone. Therefore, it does not allow an analog 7.1/5.1 sound system from the chip. Realtek ALC1220 7.1, although digitally from the SPDIF or from the HDMI output. In addition, we must note that it has a button that allows you to flash the BIOS without a processor.

Being the first AM5 motherboard that we have tested, we do not have comparative tests with other models, so we offer you the performance tests of this platform against others previously analyzed.

ASRock X670E Steel Legend Review - Full HD Gaming

AMD Ryzen 7 7950X - Overclocking

With 1.4V fixed in BIOS, we managed to bring the AMD Ryzen 9 7950X up to 5.5GHz for all cores simultaneously, although it is not completely stable and we only managed to get to Windows, but not stress tests. With 5.4 GHz, no problems, although it is a fairly high voltage and requires a lot of heat dissipation.

ASRock X670E Steel Legend BIOS

We complete the review of the ASRock X670E Steel Legend keeping an eye on the BIOS UEFIwhich has a desEsports Extrasalready known from the previous generation, although it does not have a simplified mode and we directly see the advanced one.

The eyelash OC Tweaker It allows overclocking directly on the CPU with the frequency and voltage very close at hand, although we can always leave it on automatic for self-management. Very important is the Dram Profile Configuration, where we can access the EXPO profile of the memories, if they are not compatible, or the XMP, to have them configured in a matter of seconds.

Unlike the previous generation, the Resizable BAR is active by default, as well as the PBO automatically, having to activate it if we want to squeeze the most out of the processor.

Note that, after the 1.08 update, the time of the first boot is significantly reduced, even being around 1 minute, and that of the following ones as well.

Review ASRock X670E Steel Legend conclusion

After completing the review of the ASRock X670E Steel Legendwe can conclude that it is a very complete motherboard to take advantage of the sales brought by the new AMD Ryzen 7000.

On the one hand, we will be able to get the most out of the 7950X, even with a dose of overclocking, thanks to its powerful VRM of 16+2+1 phases of 60A. Likewise, the compatibility with DDR5 memories It is a step forward in the brand, leaving aside DDR4, which, although it performs less, lowers the budget.

On the other hand, his PCIe 5.0 slot for a future compatible GPU and its M.2 PCIe 5.0 slot for higher performance SSDs they offer maximum performance, but in practice we will hardly take advantage of them. If we will take advantage of its many USB ports more easily, highlighting the pair of USB-C 3.2 Gen2x2 ports rear and front up to 20 Gbps. We must also highlight the excellent combination of network cards with a 2.5GbEa GbE and one WiFi 6E.

Against it, perhaps we only have the sound aspect, something simple and little care for a model that, although it is not high-end, is not cheap either. And we can find it for sale with a price around 400 eurosrelatively cheap within the nonsense that have been seen for the new AM5 socket, although about 150 euros more expensive than the Z690 alternative of the brand itself.

Main advantages
+ Powerful 16+2+1 phase VRM
+ Compatibility with DDR5 6600+ memories
+ PCIe 5.0 x16 slot + M.2 PCIe 5.0
+ Lots of USB ports
+ Wi-Fi 6, 2.5 GbE and GbE networks
Negative aspects
High price, in the trend of AM5 plates
Somewhat basic sound system for its range
Other Aspects
* First BIOS boot takes forever

From of The computer bungler we give you the Gold Award to motherboard ASRock X670E Steel Legend.
