Assassin’s Creed Mirage: Ubisoft reveals more about Baghdad and open world activities

Assassin's Creed Mirage takes Basim back to the franchise's roots.

Assassin’s Creed Mirage takes Basim back to the roots of the franchise.

Assassin’s Creed Mirage wants to be more based on the first parts of the series. This means that we will probably experience less RPG mechanics, more stealth and a more compact game world. Ubisoft has finally revealed what it is like in more detail. We have new information about the individual districts of Baghdad and some of the whole trappings including the open world activities.

Sexism issues at Ubisoft: The French developer and publisher has been accused of a toxic corporate culture since July 2020. These include far-reaching sexism problems, misogyny and discrimination, which are said to be deeply rooted in the company. Although Ubisoft has already taken action, for example by exchanging management staff and openly commenting on the allegations, many employees within the company feel that these measures are not sufficient.

Assassin’s Creed Mirage: Ubiosft introduces the Baghdad setting in more detail

Originally, Ubisoft did not want to take Baghdad as the location, the city was not the first choice. One possible example would have been Basim’s hometown, Samarra, where he grew up. But given the importance of Baghdad at the time of the action in the 9th century, the choice fell on the Silk Road metropolis. Samarra is said to have served at least partially as an inspiration.

Baghdad’s four districts: The city is divided into different areas. Actually, with the military district, there are probably five. At a certain point in the story, they should all be open to us and that should be the case relatively early on. The map is not only revealed area by area.

  • Karkh: The industrial district includes, among other things, the bazaar.
  • The round city: The rich core of Baghdad with the palace of the caliphate.
  • Science District: Here you will find the so-called House of Wisdom, a library.
  • Commercial District: It’s all about trade here.
  • Sharkiya Military District: A sub-area in one of the neighborhoods that is under the control of the military.

Wilderness around the city: In AC Mirage we are not only limited to the city itself, but can also venture outside of the city limits. There are supposed to be at least some pretty places that we can visit, but otherwise there is no information about them.

Alamut remains closed to us: We can’t visit the Assassin’s Fortress. It is still under construction at this point and will definitely not be a location in Assassin’s Creed Mirage. Nonetheless, it arguably plays an important role. We should also be able to move near it and visit assassin camps, for example to trade.

Size of the game world in comparison: According to the creators, the game world in Assassin’s Creed Mirage should be about as big as the maps from Assassin’s Creed Rogue or those from Revelations.

This is a bit confusing because the two are quite different from each other. A while ago, fans on the Ubisoft forums calculated that the AC Rogue map should be roughly 86km², with Constantinople from AC Revelations only coming in at 0.95km².

However, Rogue also accounts for a lot of square meters on the sea, where there is traditionally much less to do than on land.

You can find more about proportions here:

Less map items but enough to do: The open world activities in AC Mirage

Hunt and Investigation: Everything indicates that at some point in Assassin’s Creed Mirage we’ll have the opportunity to decide for ourselves in which order we pursue the objectives. They should spread all over the map again, most likely we have to find out things and eliminate targets.

World Events: Assassin’s Creed Mirage should also have world events again. That’s been confirmed, at least according to Access the Animus. But currently it remains unclear how these optional side missions will be designed and whether they will be similar to those from Assassin’s Creed Valhalla – but it looks like it.

Collectibles: AC Mirage will also have collectibles again, but according to Ubisoft “much fewer” than in the latest games in the series. A really packed, overwhelming map shouldn’t be a problem anymore.

What do you think of the information about Baghdad and what awaits us there?
