Atari will release a new game for Atari 2600

Atari, Game, release

1990 was a long time ago. It was the year East and West Germany became just Germany, Russia was still called the Soviet Union, Home Alone came out at Christmas, Sonic the Hedgehog hadn’t been invented yet, the hot consoles were the NES and Mega Drive and computer games used to mean Amiga 500.

It was also the year that Atari said goodbye to its Atari 2600the first really popular console in history, which reached approximately 30 million units sold (comparable to Sega Master System, Dreamcast and PS Vita combined). Since then, we haven’t had any new Atari releases for this old format. Until now.

Atari has announced that Mr. Run and Jump will now have a version for Atari 2600, created from the ground up for the format, and which will also be released on a classic cartridge. According to Atari:

“Made in the USA from high-quality materials, each Mr. Run and Jump cartridge comes sealed with a high-quality box, 2600 game cartridge, and instruction manual. Cartridges are manufactured to exacting standards with all New parts and materials, with beveled edges to prevent pin damage, strong gold-plated connectors, and identical power consumption to the originals.”

The pre-orders of this cartridge start July 31 for $59.99 on the official Atari website, and we guess they could sell out pretty quickly.

Are you old enough to remember the Atari 2600? What was your first console?
