Avatar: The Way of Water surpasses Titanic and becomes the highest grossing
James Cameron’s box office wars continue as Avatar: The Way of Water continues to make money as Titanic succeeds with its 25th anniversary relaunch.
Earlier this month, Avatar: The Way of Water topped the Oscar-winning classic at the international box office, and has now managed to steal third place worldwide.
According to Variety, the Avatar sequel has now earned $2.2433 billion globally, which beats Titanic’s $2.2428 billion. Of course, this means Cameron has directed the highest-grossing movie of all time (Avatar), as well as his third (Avatar: The Way of Water) and fourth (Titanic).
The only thing standing in the director’s way of total box office domination is Joe and Anthony Russo’s Avengers: Endgame, which is currently the second-highest-grossing movie of all time at $2.7 billion.
It was unclear if Avatar: The Way of Water would manage to surpass Titanic thanks to the latter’s recent re-release, which added $31,343,896 to the film’s total. Currently, it doesn’t look like the beloved film will regain its spot, but it’s been a close race.
