Baldur’s Gate 3 hastened its official release to avoid being overshadowed by Starfield, as Larian Studios’ RPG is now the highest-rated PC game of all time on Metacritic and OpenCritic.
Baldur’s Gate 3 has received universal acclaim and has been ranked at the top of Metacritic’s Best Games lists. Its score of 97 makes it the highest-rated game of 2023, beating The Case of the Golden Idol, Street Fighter 6, and Diablo IV.
The game is also one of those rare examples where both critics and gamers agree. BG3’s user rating of 9.1 makes it the best game of 2023 according to consumers.
Baldur’s Gate 3 is also the Best PC Game of All Time on Metacritic. Disco Elysium has the same rating of 9.1, but its user rating is 8.3. On the all-time user ratings chart for PC games, BG3 ranks tenth: the nine games above it, including Baldur’s Gate 2: Shadows of Amn in seventh place, have ratings of 9.2.
Not just on Metacritic, Baldur’s Gate 3 also dominates on Opencritic as the best PC game of all time, sharing the title of “best game of all time” (across all platforms) with Super Mario Odyssey. Last week it was announced that the number of concurrent players for Baldur’s Gate 3 on Steam surpassed hits like Valheim and Apex Legends just days after its release.
Baldur’s Gate 3 had an early access period of almost 3 years, which helped it avoid a trend we’ve seen all too often this year, where PC games launch with a multitude of technical issues. The final version has proven so impressive that one developer warned gamers not to expect the same from all studios or hold future RPGs to a higher standard.
