Back in mid-January of this year, we were talking about the catastrophic event that led to Bandai Namco and FromSoftware’s temporarily close the servers of the Souls saga on PC. A very serious cybersecurity flaw in this aspect of the titles made Japanese companies make a drastic decision, for which they could not give us an expiration date.
Today, approaching mid-May, we are still waiting for a statement official about it, but the closest thing to it that we have is an email received by a Reddit user. Tired of waiting for no news, u / Relevant-Heart-1751, he decided to contact customer service at Bandai Namco, publisher of Dark Souls and Elden Ring.
“I am happy to confirm that the developers are actively working to resolve the issue at hand and get the Dark Souls servers back on PC as soon as possible. At the moment, we do not have an estimated date of when this may happen, although I encourage you to follow us on social networks to keep up to date with the matter, “says the response received by the user.
Although many have been quick to cast the bells on the fly, other Reddit users are not so optimistic and think that it is an empty and typical public relations response. After all, since there is no date or estimate, the feeling that many players have is that is not being solved the topic, as all of FromSoftware’s resources are being put towards Elden Ring and its possible next game, Armored Core 6.
In the end, the opaque treatment of what is being done behind the scenes is affecting the public opinion of the saga community quite a bit. I recently talked about how Japanese companies had removed the multiplayer tag from Dark Souls games on Steam, which could indicate that the problem was going to last a long time, although the worrying thing was not the movement, but the fact that there would be no communication about. On a personal note, and not based on specific information, I think that the servers will return, even if it is in the hands of Easy Anti-Cheat, but this strategy of silence, in a less beloved franchise, would surely have ended with the abandonment of its community.
It should be noted that efforts have been made by the modding community to get the games online again, but they are not recommended at all. Far from fixing the huge security flaw, what they do is simply connect the players without patching the vulnerability. If you are considering using these mods, I would personally recommend that you think twice (or even three) times, because your system can go very badly in the worst case.
