Gerwig is now the female director with the highest-grossing film at the domestic box office, surpassing Jennifer Lee, co-director of Frozen II.

Barbie will be released digitally for purchase on September 5. After that, it will be available to stream, and that should be on Max this fall.

Given the huge success of Barbie, a sequel seems likely, but it’s not yet confirmed (despite media reports). However, the company Mattel, maker of Barbie, is moving forward with movies based on some of its other famous toy properties, including Hot Wheels.
