Call of Duty: Modern Warfare III will bring back one of the franchise’s most controversial missions, “No Russian.”

There is no moment that compares to the reaction to the original “No Russian” mission in Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2. At the start of the 2009 game, players can take part in a mission where they play an undercover agent of the CIA into a terrorist group led by a man named Makarov. After the mission begins, you get out of an elevator in a busy Russian airport and open fire on civilians with light machine guns. It’s incredibly shocking, macabre, and disturbing, but it kicks off the game’s story and leads to the United States being blamed for the attack, sparking World War III.

The rebooted Modern Warfare series has tackled a new storyline with familiar characters like Captain Price, Soap, and Ghost, but the newly revealed Call of Duty: Modern Warfare III will echo one of the franchise’s most iconic moments.

In the new trailer for Call of Duty: Modern Warfare III, we see a man arm a gun on a plane after receiving a text message saying “No Russian”, then he gets up from his seat and starts waving the gun around, presumably before attacking the people on board. We’ve seen glimpses of a plane crash in the MW3 promo so far, so it’s likely the result of this moment.

Some wondered if Modern Warfare III would show this moment, as the new rebooted series has scaled back some of these more disturbing moments. The “No Russian” mission was hinted at at the end of Modern Warfare II (2022) and it looks like we’ll get to see it play out in this game, though it’s unclear what its implications for the larger story will be or how it will play out. It’s noticeably different this time, as it takes place on a real plane instead of a busy airport.
