The Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 campaEsports Extrasdoes a few things differently than its predecessors.

Call of Duty has always stood for bombastic but strictly linear single player campaigns. New to the story campaign are the Open Combat Missions, which are more reminiscent of open world games à la Far Cry or Ghost Recon. In other words, you will be thrown into a large area and you can decide for yourself whether you want to use night vision goggles and silencers or rather use a rocket launcher and LMG.

This is reminiscent of a few exceptions in Call of Duty history (like Black Ops: Cold War), but above all of other games that offer more freedom of play. The strictly linear story missions with bombastic staging should of course also be back in Modern Warfare 3, don’t worry.

This is how Call of Duty fans are reacting to the more open structure of the story campaign

What the fans say: So far, the CoD players have reacted very differently to this quite extensive innovation. A clear trend cannot yet be read out, the reactions are mixed.

Some fans are really looking forward to it: Many welcome the change and want more freedom of choice anyway. Previous missions like Recon by Firew from Modern Warfare 2 or Sentinel from Advanced Warfare could point the way.

“Ever since I played AW’s Sentinel mission, I’ve wanted less linear missions where you can use different methods to move towards the same goal. FINALLY it’s happening and it’s beautiful!”

Is stealth broken again? Another more or less justified concern from fans is that such missions could often rely on stealth. However, the stealth mechanics in Call of Duty games often do not work properly or are “completely broken”, as in this one tweet here means. This would limit the freedom of choice.

Just recycling and empty levels? The Open Combat Missions probably play mostly on already known parts of the old Warzone map Verdansk if we take a closer look at the trailer. This causes skepticism among some players: the sandbox missions only exist because there was no time for a complete single-player campaign.

What do you think of the idea of incorporating such larger, freer missions into CoD Modern Warfare 3’s story campaign?
