There are some titles that in one way or another we can define as immortal, of which we jealously guard a splendid memory, where memory and imagination go even beyond what was the real experience. The task of remastered in a certain sense it is precisely that of bringing this magic back to reality, and where more, where less, the result is always welcome. If then in front of us we create the possibility to get our hands on a game that hands down was worth buying a console (in this case PSP), the enjoyment is double. The timing is the right one, perfect to say the least, for the return of Crisis corewith a remastered that arrives on every console currently active, and that will revive (and many experience for the first time) one of the most beautiful Final Fantasy stories ever, that of Zack Fair and his greatest aspiration: to become a hero. Crisis Core -Final Fantasy VII- Reunion it’s a remastered indeed necessary“justified” like few others before it, which acts as a link explaining who Zack is to all new players (with Final Fantasy VII Remake), despite this game – being a 1 to 1 remake – both narratively the same released on PSP, and consequently unrelated to the new Square Enix adventure.
The story of an aspiring hero
No additions or changes to the story, same ending. The experience that Crisis Core -Final Fantasy VII- Reunion offers is therefore not just a nostalgia operation for the now older players (certainly in need of a refresher for those who now remember the story in a faded way), but a real novelty for those who have only played FFVII Remake. For this reason we will limit ourselves to talking only about the introductory part of the game from a narrative point of view. Zack is a young boy in SOLDIERan elite military section of the Shinra who takes care of the most important and dangerous missions in the country. As you will soon find out, Zack is a SOLDIER by 2nd classwho after some time spent in training sees his chance arrive with an important mission a wutaiwhich could permanently end the ongoing war (and earn him a promotion).
With him, the friend and mentor Angel1st class SOLDIER, with which he will have to complete the objective, as well as find out what happened to another of the 1st class SOLDIER “missing in action” in Wutai: genesis. Clearly during the story there will be a particular evolution and it will be full of twistswhich many will already know, and of course you will also come into contact with well-known characters in the world of Final Fantasy VII (someone thought of Aerith oa Sephirot?). The story, its evolution, and the ending are among the most popular and famous of the entire Final Fantasy series.
Wear, scratches and rust
In terms of gameplay, the title has remained almost completely unchanged from its first appearance: in terms of construction it remains old-fashioned, i.e. with a corridor to go through with the road widening into semi-explorable areas only in some cases, and other places with different forks where it will be possible to take a road, collect what is useful, and then return to the main road. Clearly during the journey we will always encounter enemies, who will spawn in certain points of the map, activating combat mode.
As opposed to the classic games of the Final Fantasy series (at least up to a point) the combat is almost completely actionwith the possibility of dodge the opponents blows, and to fight by alternating sword blows and spells using the Subjects. While the flavor of it all feels a little retro, this play structure feels it direct and entertaining, without the need for exaggerated technical conundrums to weigh everything down. The facade of “game of yesteryear” is therefore present, but which does not differ too much from other modern titles that have chosen a more linear path and with a skill-based combat system. Sure, we go against the trend of the last decade, open worlds, but that doesn’t make it any less up-to-date.
However, this Crisis Core -Final Fantasy VII- Reunion sees its greatest strengths in the work of streamlining that was done: faster in uploads (it also depends on the platform where you will play it, we have tested on PS5), more clear on the menusAnd graphically clean and glittering. It should also be said that such general streamlining is palpable in practice also thanks to some small but significant changes that have been made within the game, such as the material managementof the summons and the special abilities slot machine (the OMD). Side quests will also be available through i save points scattered throughout the game chapters, therefore they can be tackled – almost – at any time you want, thus allowing you to obtain objects and materials useful in the mission also from them, as well as from the shops.
Crisis Core -Final Fantasy VII- Reunion (Tested on PS5)
Crisis Core -Final Fantasy VII- Reunion is a remastered slap, which leaves intact the original experience that players have been able to love long ago on PSP, bringing it back adapted to today’s technical standards. The strong impact of the story will be best transmitted to the new generation of players, as well as remembered to the older ones. A title in step with the times despite its clear retro connotations in the game structure, and which players will be able to enjoy according to their needs and platforms (playing on Switch could bring back the portable vibes of the original console, while for example playing on PS5 could offer new, modern ones).
