CYBERPUNK 2077

Cyberpunk: Edgerunners trailer is gory, stylish, and exactly what I want

Cyberpunk Edgerunners: The Netflix Series Trailer is an atmospheric action beast

Brutal, stylish and damn cool – that’s exactly what the Cyberpunk 2077 anime promises Cyberpunk: Edgerunners to become. In the latest trailer, this time from the Japanese animation team at Studio Trigger (Kill la Kill, Promare) themselves, we get another look at some of the main characters and the impressive animations of the series. So far, the trailer is only available in Japanese with English subtitles, which some anime fans should definitely welcome.

This is what Cyberpunk: Edgerunners is all about: Although the anime is set in the same world as Cyberpunk 2077, it focuses on new characters. Above all, the “Street Kid” David, who wants to prove himself as a freshly minted edge runner, a kind of illegal mercenary.

While the exact plot is yet to be revealed, the trailer seems to at least hint that David has lost his mother and is now undergoing cyber implants to keep up in the brutal world of Night City.

Together with a crew consisting of the mercenaries Maine, Dorio, Kiwi, Pilar, Rebecca and Lucy, the team has to deal with one of the most powerful mega-corporations in the world.

More Cyberpunk 2077 news:

Cyberpunk: Edgerunners is scheduled to start on Netflix in September 2022 and will include a total of 10 episodes, but there is no concrete release date yet. The series is a collaboration between Studio Trigger and CD Projekt Red.

The Japanese studio Trigger has only really been on my radar since Promare. But even here the expressive and stylish animations coupled with the sparkling color backdrop looked simply bombastic. And that seems to be exactly what I can expect in Cyberpunk: Edgerunners. So that alone would be reason enough to watch the anime.

As a huge fan of the TTRPG Shadowrun, I have a second motivation. While there are certainly some differences between the worlds of Cyberpunk and Shadowrun, the common mood of the stylish dystopian setting definitely comes through in the anime. And if that’s as close as I’ll ever get to a Shadowrun series, I’ll gladly take it.

What do you think of the anime? Do you wish for more well-known characters back or are you happy about the fresh story?
