If Diablo 4 was very well received by the press and the players, the picture darkened in the weeks following the release. Before season 2, Blizzard makes its mea culpa.
Diablo 4 offered a launch worthy of Blizzard’s cult franchise. Fans of the license generally loved it, but a few weeks later, it was a cold shower. The publisher and developer has drawn the wrath of players with season 1. The changes have absolutely not passed, and since then updates have been deployed to correct the situation. The best to come for season 2?
Blizzard aware of the failure of Diablo 4 season 1
Blizzard’s hack’n slash, Diablo 4, tied Diablo 2 on Metacritic rating. A success that was not necessarily acquired given the bad buzz around a certain Diablo Immortal. A successful launch… until season 1 went online. During this season, the developers decided to review the balancing for a result that was not as expected. All classes have been decreased, XP gain has been reduced, and other changes have angered the game community very much.
During an interview for Gamescom 2023, franchise director Rod Fergusson admitted to the mistakes of Diablo 4 season 1. “We made mistakes in how to manage expectations. And it was difficult because we felt like we were doing the right thing. We tried to go a little fast, to be reactive, but that was not the solution. We realized there was a problem with managing expectations, and we had to own up to that and recognize that we needed to do better, especially in the way patch notes were released.” (via Gamesradar). Indeed, if the anger has been even more important, it is partly because the players have discovered the changes point-blank.
But I promise, it shouldn’t happen again. Fergusson and his teams want to continue improving Diablo 4 based on their experience. “That’s one thing that we really learned in Season 1 and Season 2. We have our own polls, telemetry, roundtables, developer streams, and all of the internal research. We’re going to do better and we’re going to keep making the game better.”.
The Change Season 2
And we will indeed have to do much better. Players certainly won’t be as patient if Diablo 4 Season 2 is missed. The stakes are therefore very high for Blizzard who have already revealed what to expect. Do you like vampires? Season 2, which will be available on October 17, 2023, will introduce a horde of bloodsuckers ready to devour you through a new series of quests. To defeat the five new endgame bosses and all the enemies, you will be supported by Erys. A ghoul hunter played by Gemma Chan (The Eternals, Don’t Worry Darling…).
That’s the general preview for Diablo 4 season 2, but Blizzard has detailed the upcoming changes. Critical damage, elemental resistances and status effects (vulnerable, overwhelmed…) will not be the same. Gem management will be more efficient. And finally, paragon points, potion charges, obol capacity upgrades and skill points can be saved. However, it will be necessary to have obtained these elements from a character of the Eternal Kingdom or the previous Seasonal Kingdom. Diablo 4 is available on PS5, PS4, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One and PC.
