Anyone who likes FIFA games has had a difficult time on the Nintendo Switch in recent years. Implementations for the Nintendo console have appeared, but they were significantly slimmer compared to the other versions – for example on PlayStation and Xbox. There were only squad updates, modes and features were missing, and the game didn’t run on the Frostbite engine. These “Legacy Editions” were always quite a disappointment, which is why we regularly warned about them.
But that will change with the expiry of the FIFA license and the new name. EA Sports FC 24 is the first football game release from EA since FIFA 19 – i.e. for almost 5 years – in which the switch version is almost on a par with the “big ” versions is.
Not as slimmed down as last time
That means: The game also runs on the Nintendo console on the Frostbite Engine, there is now also the manager career and the Volta mode on the hybrid console. As the official trailer reveals, the Ultimate Team mode will probably also be playable in its entirety on the switch. Although FUT was also available in the Legacy Editions, it was always in a significantly reduced form.
Here’s the trailer for the Switch version:

Compromises still have to be made on the hybrid console. While HypermotionV animation technology is used on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S and PC, the Switch has to be satisfied with “PlayStyles”, which is similar in principle but not as profound. In addition, the cross-play function is missing.
Still, it’s a step in the right direction and great news for anyone who’s been waiting for a “proper” new version of an EA soccer game for years. It is to be hoped that EA will continue to do this in the coming years and that we will not be “surprised” with the next Legacy Edition in 2024.
EA announced more interesting information about the upcoming football game in a live stream. Manchester City striker Erling Haaland will grace the cover of the Standard Edition, there are two other women’s leagues and the Women’s Champions League. EA Sports FC 24 will be released on September 29, 2023 for PlayStation, Xbox, Switch and PC, Early Access is a week earlier.
What do you think of EA’s decision?
