During a post-Summer Game Fest interview (via Push Square), creative director Nicolas Doucet suggested that hybrid development would never make sense. From the beginning of the project, the game was planned as an expanded and more technological flat version.

We focused 100% on this one from the beginning, after Astro’s Playroom. (It was) the hope that if it was well received, it could be a platformer that stands on its own, and we could go out and make a bigger version of it. So no, (PSVR2) was not taken into consideration.

Team Asobi also commented that a VR version should be “entirely designed for this medium”. If Astro Bot were a first-person game, it would be simpler to make it hybrid. However, the new PS5 exclusive has a “very different” design philosophy.
