Baldur's Gate 3 players disappointed by companion inequality

Baldur's Gate 3 has some of the best companions in recent RPG history, but that doesn't mean they're all on the same level.

The cast of Baldur's Gate 3 is one of the most memorable in recent years, especially the original characters. The game's runaway success in 2023 was largely based on the instant recognition of characters like Astarion and Shadowheart. Indeed, the latter are animated by excellent writing and quality dubbing.

But not all the characters were received in the same way. Many camp members play a lesser role in the story of Baldur's Gate, such as Halsin. Indeed, his quest ends during Act 2 and has little to do with the rest of the story.

Also, many feel that Wyll doesn't get the screen time he deserves. Especially given its importance in the administration of the eponymous city.

Baldur's Gate 3 Players Prove Not All Companions Are Equal

On Reddit, player JRStors started the debate. He said : ” After several playthroughs, I've noticed that some companions receive a lot more attention/story content than others. It bothers me to the point that some companions like Wyll or Karlach barely have anything to do. while others like Shadowheart or Lae'Zel are practically the main characters aside from Tav/Dark Urges.

I agree that this is largely due to differences in development time or rewrites (like in the case of Wyll in early access), but that doesn't seem right. Even Gayle, another Early Access companion, barely has anything to do until the end of Act 2 and a bit into Act 3.

I apologize if I criticize Shadowheart too much, but when she gets 10 unique cutscenes in act one and an entire act two story dedicated partially to her past, it becomes very annoying. And when she has a flashback in the dialogue, we actually see a cutscene of it. But when Wyll or Astarion have flashbacks, we just get some narrative dialogue and no scenes? »

Several players agreed, especially on the point regarding Wyll. Another player wrote: “ Wyll's father is kidnapped by the main villains in the first act, yet its content is so sparse and buggy. It's absurd “.

This community feedback highlights the importance of a balanced experience for all characters in Baldur's Gate 3.
