A survey carried out by the Second National Survey of the Games Industry (via GamesIndustry) reveals that the Brazilian games industry grew 3.2% last year. In terms of revenue, this number is equivalent to a cumulative total of US$251.6 million, according to data gathered between 2022 and 2023.

Carried out in partnership between Abragames and ApexBrasil, the research interviewed 309 developers, 214 freelance professionals and 80 service and support organizations for game development. With this, it was pointed out that the number of studios in the country jumped from 1,009 in 2021 to 1,042 in 2023.

Game sales on digital platforms increased from 54% in 2021 to 62% in 2022, while retail saw a reduction from 30% to 23% in the same period. The largest revenue generated in these terms involved PC consumers, followed by mobile and consoles.

With 1,000 games launched in 2022 by the Brazilian games industry — an increase of 12% compared to 2021 — the number of debut titles between 2020 and 2022 reached 2,600. 93% of the more than 1,042 studios were responsible for developing their own games.

Brazilian games industry increases number of workers in the area

Another highlight of the research shows that the Brazilian games industry saw the number of employees increase between 2022 and 2023. Amid waves of layoffs around the world, it is estimated that around 800 people started working on game development in Brazil in 2022 .

Thus, the total number of employees in the area jumped from 12,441 in 2021 to 13,225 in 2022.

“The data presented in the second edition of the survey also reinforces Brazil’s position as one of the most promising regions for the provision of external development services, as had already been indicated in the XDS Summit reports, a global reference topic”, comments the president from Abragames, Rodrigo Terra.
