Bridgerton finale: a major change for Penelope in season 3 hailed by fans

Penelope’s plot in season 3 of The Bridgerton Chronicles deviated slightly from that of the novels, but fans nevertheless recognized that the choice of the series took nothing away from the character’s moment of glory.

Warning: this article contains spoilers from part 2 of season 3 of The Bridgerton Chronicles.

That’s it, Lady Whistledown is unmasked! After years of writing the gossip of London’s high society, the author of Worldly Chronicles lifted the veil on his own identity in the season 3 finale of The Bridgerton Chronicles on Netflix.

Such a revelation had been in the works for years, and was inevitable. Between the investigations of the Queen and Eloise, then of Cressida Cowper, it was to be expected that the truth would triumph. Fortunately, the secret was less devastating than expected, and Pénélope Bridgerton managed to transform the scene into a moving moment during the eighth and final episode of season 3.

The young woman explains in fact during her sisters’ ball the reasons which pushed her to write under a pseudonym, returning to her regrets of having been able to hurt the targets of her columns, and assuring that she wants to continue writing for subjects more respectful. The Queen eventually allowed her to continue publishing under the name Lady Whistledown.

A vibrant scene, but which has nothing to do with Julia Quinn’s novels adapted by the Netflix series. Indeed, it is actually Colin who makes the decision to reveal the truth to the two families and to society in the books. He does this in the hope of protecting Penelope from the royal wrath, and forcing Cressida to stop lying by claiming to be the author of the chronicles.

If the gentleman then seems to show love for his wife in the novels, the decision to put Penelope at the center of the stage in the series also convinced the fans. Obviously, readers still expressed their perplexity at such a change, but the choice was defended by other spectators.

Like this Internet user, who explains in a thread on X/Twitter that he is a fan of the book but comes to the conclusion that the series offers something more: “This scene is made FOR the development of Penelope’s character. All she ever wanted was to feel confident, to find that courage (which Colin praises shortly after) that she had been searching for long before Lady Whistledown. That’s what Lady Whistledown was all about, FINDING your voice and USING IT.”

The Internet user concludes: “Even if Colin didn’t YELL to the seven seas about how proud he was of Penelope, it doesn’t matter because that’s not what Penelope wanted. The fact that Colin is by her side while she is brave enough to step out of the shadows and be who she wanted to be is enough for Penelope!
