Does Elden Ring work on Steam Deck?

Published

on

Elden Ring may have retained the expected difficulty of souls-like, but running FromSoftware’s RPG epic on Steam Deck is a breeze.

Elden Ring took the world by storm when it launched in 2022, instantly becoming the favorite to win the prestigious Game of the Year award across multiple platforms. The same goes for its time on Steam Deck, where the game continues to be among the “Most Played Games on Steam Deck” for months.

Over the years, Elden Ring has even gotten its own official intro movie on Steam Deck, further cementing its presence on that handheld console.

Now, with Shadow of the Erdtree, the game’s first DLC, on the way, there’s no better time to pick up where your Unsullied character left off on Steam Deck.

Can you play Elden Ring on Steam Deck?

The answer is yes, Elden Ring can be played on Steam Deck, and FromSoftware’s epic can reach an average of 40 FPS on Valve’s portable console.

The game, when it launched, did not run well on Steam Deck, with significant framerate drops and poor graphics. However, Valve has since helped optimize Elden Ring for the Steam Deck, which has significantly improved the game’s performance with beautiful visuals and great stability.

Elden Ring Shadow of the Erdtree DLC

As shown in the footage from YouTuber DeckWizard’s video, Elden Ring still works brilliantly on the Steam Deck after all these years. When testing Elden Ring on an OLED model of Steam Deck, which is running Steam OS version 3.6, the Underdark also looked stunning on the upgraded OLED display.

As seen in the video, the game runs between 40 and 60 FPS, providing a smooth handheld RPG experience. Although it has been optimized for the handheld console over the years, its graphically intensive nature can lead to your battery draining quickly. As a result, we recommend keeping the Steam Deck charger handy.

Elden Ring’s first DLC expansion, Shadow of the Erdtree, will soon be available on both Steam and Steam Deck. However, there is no sign of it working on the handheld console yet. Either way, with how Elden Ring is optimized, we can assume that the DLC will follow the same path and continue to be one of the best games on Steam Deck.

Elden Ring requires 60 GB of storage space on Steam Deck, which isn’t a lot by today’s standards. However, the upcoming Shadow of the Erdtree DLC takes up an additional 16.5 GB, bringing the total to 76.5 GB.

So make sure you have enough storage to fully enjoy Elden Ring and its DLC on Steam Deck.
