Dragon's Dogma 2 arrives 12 years after the release of Capcom's original cult RPG. The sequel improves on the original in every aspect and also expands its universe. So if you're planning to explore the series starting with the sequel, here's whether you need to play the first game to understand Dragon's Dogma 2.

After years of requests from fans, Capcom's Monster Hunter-inspired RPG series returns with Dragon's Dogma 2. The long-awaited title brings back familiar mechanics such as Pawns, Vocations, and Character Creation. It allows players to take on the role of the Insurgent, a hero destined to defeat a fearsome dragon and fulfill an ancient prophecy.

There's a lot of lore attached to the game's universe, and it also has some unique gameplay features that newcomers might have difficulty with.

So find out if you need to play the first game to fully enjoy Dragon's Dogma 2.

Should you play Dragon's Dogma 1 before playing DD2?

Dragon's Dogma 2 Characters

No, you don't need to play the first game to fully enjoy Dragon's Dogma 2. This means you can launch the RPG and understand the main story twists while having little knowledge of 2012's Dragon's Dogma: Dark Arisen.

The developers wanted the sequel to be accessible to newcomers and they succeeded, in part, by making your character have amnesia, as game director Hideaki Itsuno said.

During an interview with GamesRadar+, Itsuno said, “ The game begins with a main character who has lost his memory », thus allowing the NPCs around you to give you the necessary information: “ the characters around you explain things to bring you up to date. So even if it's your first time in Dragon's Dogma, you can go ahead safely “.

It's also important to note that the game takes place in a parallel world to the 2012 original, providing a perfect entry point for new players.
