Dragon's Dogma 2 director Hideaki Itsuno shared his opinion on the evolution of the original RPG and its reputation as a “cult” game. In an exclusive interview with VG247, he expressed that the series should no longer be labeled that way due to its sales success and growing popularity.

“I believe it is no longer necessary to categorize Dragon's Dogma as a 'cult' game,” Itsuno stated during the conversation. “Over the years, he has earned his space and won the hearts of many players.”

Since the release of the first title in 2012 for PS3 and Xbox 360, Dragon's Dogma has expanded its presence to platforms such as PS4, Xbox One, PC and Nintendo Switch. With more than 7.9 million copies sold by September 2023, the RPG grew on the scene and became an anime on Netflix in 2020.

Itsuno highlighted that innovative features such as the Pawn system and grappling mechanics contributed to the franchise's uniqueness and lasting appeal. However, he sees that Dragon's Dogma 2 doesn't need to be labeled this way, after all, the current IP landscape is totally different. Do you agree?
