The Elden Ring story trailer Shadow of the Erdtree focuses on a Glimmerless following Miquella’s path after he escapes Mohg’s clutches and flees to the Shadow Realm. The Miquella Crosses are valuable clues.

What are the Miquella Crosses?

Aside from a fragment of lore, Miquella’s Crosses don’t do much on their own. Interacting with them reveals some sort of Miquella’s journal entry where the demigod has discarded another part of her body. Additionally, its flesh and blood transformed into flowers that could be used to craft various materials.

The Miquella Crosses also serve as landmarks and clues to its destination, so you will often find NPCs, Sites of Grace and Occult Tree Splinters nearby. They therefore have some use in the gameplay, although indirectly.

They exist because Miquella’s body is decaying, likely due to her treatment by Mohg, the Blood Lord. The creature he transformed into is still stuck in its cocoon, but it is implied that Miquella escaped that body somehow and is now left with another one that is slowly deteriorating so as he travels through the Realm of Shadows.

The rejection of her body can also be interpreted as Miquella renouncing her commitment to the Golden Order, her mother’s religion, and the laws of the Elden Ring. This suggests that Miquella has a very specific idea behind her head in Shadow of the Erdtree, free from the will of the other characters.
