The rise, fall and future of Blizzard. That's what the new book by famous games journalist Jason Schreier, today on Bloomberg, will tell you. In a post on the social network X this Monday (5), he announced the launch of Play Nice, which is already on pre-sale and will be released on October 8th.

“I'm very happy to announce that my next book is PLAY NICE: The Rise, Fall, and Future of Blizzard Entertainment. It chronicles the 33-year history of one of the most fascinating gaming companies and will be released on October 8th.”he wrote.

Check out the official description of the book:

For video game fans, the name Blizzard Entertainment was once synonymous with perfection. The renowned company celebrated the joy of gaming above all else, and every product it released became an instant classic: StarCraft, Diablo, Overwatch, Hearthstone, and World of Warcraft, which forever changed the video game landscape. What was a simple mission for two UCLA students – to make games they wanted to play – gave rise to an empire with thousands of employees, millions of fans and billions of dollars.

But when Blizzard canceled a promising project in 2013, it gave Bobby Kotick, the infamous CEO of corporate parent Activision, the excuse he needed to start cracking down on Blizzard's proud autonomy. Led by executives from McKinsey and Procter & Gamble, Activision began raiding Blizzard from within, driving away hordes of key employees in search of predictability rather than creativity. Failed products, public relations disasters, and mass layoffs followed, tarnishing the company's once pristine image. In 2021, the state of California filed a shocking lawsuit against the company for sexual misconduct and discrimination, leading to a widespread accounting and a $69 billion acquisition that sent shockwaves through the industry.

Based on personal interviews with more than 300 current and former employees, PLAY NICE chronicles the creativity, frustration, beauty, and betrayal throughout Blizzard Entertainment's epic 33-year saga – and explores the joy and despair of what it truly means to “bleed blue.” by Blizzard.” Full of colorful personalities and dramatic twists, PLAY NICE is THE Social Network of the video game industry.

The mass layoffs at Microsoft, reported this Thursday (25), had major consequences for ongoing projects. One of them, planned as a AAA survival game from Blizzard, was canceled after Mike Ybarra and leaders said goodbye to their executive positions.

With the acquisition of Activision estimated at US$69 billion, Microsoft has initiated a plan with a “sustainable cost structure” that will support the “growing business”. As a result, the company took the decision to reduce its workforce in the gaming sector by almost 10%.

Of the 22,000 people integrated into the teams at Bethesda, Activision and internal studios, 1,900 are no longer part of the companies. Among them is former Blizzard president Mike Ybarra, who chose to leave his position, alongside other developers and leaders. Find out more here.
