Fortnite servers underwent maintenance in preparation for the new season, but the process took longer than expected, leaving players without access to the battle royale during the period.

Maintenance began at 5am on Friday (8) and was expected to be completed within a period of 2 or 4 hours. However, Epic Games announced “an unexpected error” and, therefore, the servers were scheduled to return at 7pm on the same day.

Hello everyone, we encountered an unexpected issue during our maintenance and need to extend the downtime by at least an additional 8 hours. We apologize for making everyone wait longer than usual to jump into Chapter 5, Season 2 of the Battle Royale. The team is working on this as quickly as possible and we will provide another update when we have more information.

Apparently, the process took even longer, as the Fortnite Status account on X was updated at 12:30 pm on March 9th. The publisher announces that update v.29.00 is online and the Fortnite servers are active.

The curse of opening Pandora's Box is over – v29.00 is live! Thank you everyone for being patient with us as we work through this long downtime. This is much appreciated.
