GTA San Andreas had real gang members voicing NPCs

Twenty years after its initial release, GTA San Andreas had interesting details shared by veteran Lazlow Jones. The former Rockstar Games revealed that the studio would have recruited real gang members to voice NPCs.

In an interview with Kinda Funny Games, co-founder Dan Houser’s former colleague commented that people from American communities contributed suggestions for the script. Integrated into local crime, they said what their expressions would be and what they would not be.

GTA San Andreas voices would not be found in large cities

This strategy was reinforced by the need to portray “specific accents or languages” in GTA San Andreas. Thus, Rockstar teams traveled to New Mexico and New Orleans because they could not find the voices in “actors from New York or Los Angeles.”

We showed them the scripts and they said ‘we wouldn’t say this, we wouldn’t say that, we would say this’. One of the things I’m really proud of is the authenticity we strive for.

Like Dan Houser, Lazlow Jones is no longer part of the GTA San Andreas studio.

GTA San Andreas is available for PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series, Nintendo Switch and PC, as part of the definitive trilogy. The collection also includes GTA III and GTA Vice City.
