Hidetaka Miyazaki is a man who gets his hands dirty. Despite holding the title of president of FromSoftware, the dev spends most of his time working directly on the company’s games, as a director.

In an interview with the English newspaper The Guardian, Miyazaki explained that being a corporate executive is not his passion. In the past, he was promoted to president because of the success of the Souls series.

I enjoy helping to grow and train younger directors who I see will guide the company into the next phase. But sitting in a management office all day isn’t my style.

I really get my hands dirty and continue making games together (with the team). In this way, I hope to be able to pass on my methods to a different generation of talent.

Miyazaki then detailed how he divides his work between developer and executive. And, at least according to him, there is almost no room left to act as president.

I’ve had the title of president (of FromSoftware) for almost ten years, but I would say that 95% of what I do at the company and how I spend my time is focused on creating games and directing them. Using that account, you can say I only have six months of experience as an executive!

In the same interview, Hidetaka also commented on the high difficulty of his games. For him, it would be a “mistake” to reduce it, as it would “break the game”.

The dev’s first successful work was directing Demon’s Souls, an RPG published in the West by Atlus, which started the well-known Souls series. Eventually, the title received a remake at the hands of Bluepoint Games, a PlayStation studio.

Your most recent hit is Elden Ring. The RPG received the Game of the Year award in 2022 and has just had its first DLC released: Shadow of the Erdtree. In fact, the expansion is already considered the best in history, according to its score on Metacritic.

Hidetaka Miyazaki would like to make a tactical RPG

Hidetaka Miyazaki revealed that he would like to produce a more tactical JRPG game. In an interview with Rolling Stone, the director expressed his desire for a different project, but he defends creating something completely original and not involving properties that belong to the studio.
