How to defeat Furnace enemies in Elden Ring Shadow of the Erdtree

Shadow of the Erdtree’s Furnaces are among the most difficult enemies added to Elden Ring. Here’s how to defeat them easily.

The Furnaces were a prominent enemy in the original Elden Ring Shadow of the Erdtree trailer. They are a variant of the Fire Giant boss which is inspired by the 1973 horror film The Wicker Man, these monsters are true nightmares and embody the “Flame of Messmer”.

As soon as you set foot in the Shadow Realm, one of the first things you’ll see is a staggering Furnace in the distance. Brave souls might be tempted to charge straight at him, but that’s not always a good idea.

Here’s everything you need to know about the Furnaces in Elden Ring Shadow of the Erdtree, including how to defeat them.

What are Furnaces?

Furnaces are not a standard boss in Shadow of the Erdtree, they are actually recurring field bosses that patrol certain areas. Some are dormant until you approach, while others are alert and see you coming from afar, meaning you’ll have to run at full speed to avoid their powerful long-range attacks.

They are comparable to Traveling Mausoleums from the base game, in that they are optional enemies that are extremely difficult to kill. They do not have health bars like most bosses in Elden Ring and can be avoided entirely throughout your adventure. However, there is one segment where you will need to actively avoid or destroy one that is blocking your path.

Should I attack the first Furnace?

Those rushing to attack the first Furnace in the opening minutes of Shadow of the Erdtree might be in for a nasty surprise. Although it’s not invincible, at this point in the adventure you’ll have a really hard time taking down a Furnace and it’s probably best to avoid them until you have gathered Shadow Blessings.

Each hit you land on this boss will do little damage, and the massive creature will be able to kill you and your Summoning Ashes without much effort. Think of them a bit like when you first saw the Tree Sentinel at the start of Elden Ring: rushing to fight him isn’t always the best strategy.

Later in the game, you’ll be much better equipped to take down these menacing monsters, but until then, be sure to gather your Shadow Blessings.

The Furnaces are virtually immune to most normal attackshowever, if you land enough powerful blows to their legs, you can make them stagger – but don’t expect the attacks themselves to do much damage. This makes them fall and allows you to wear a critical attack on their headwhich is their weak point.

Employing this strategy is risky, as being under the Furnace’s legs is dangerous, but it keeps you away from their powerful ranged attacks. Be careful, though, as they tend to flood the ground with fire to dislodge you.

Be careful, some Furnaces have spiked armor on their legs, which means this strategy won’t work. In this case, use a great bow or spells like Azure Comet to attack their weak point from a distance. This will deal constant damage, but it can be difficult to hit them while riding your Torrent mount and avoiding their fire attacks.

The best way to kill Furnaces isn’t always an option, but if you can get to a high position to be on par with them, you can throw a heavy Firepot/Furnace directly into their basket, which will explode dealing massive damage. Again, this can be difficult, but if you succeed, it will drain a lot of their health.

Although Furnaces are difficult to kill, defeating them rewards you with new Crystal Tears and, ironically, heavy Fire Pots.
