One Piece would have already revealed Shanks’ true intentions without everyone knowing

Shanks is one of the most mysterious characters in One Piece. However, the manga would have revealed its true intentions a while ago, but they may have been lost in translation.

Even if the different layers of mysteries of One Piece begin to be revealed thanks to the Egghead arc and the Vegapunk message, there are still many enigmas remaining – not to mention the new ones that the author had fun adding in chapter 1117 of the manga. And the secrets are more numerous with one character in particular: Red Shanks, Emperor, Luffy’s mentor and former member of the crew of the pirate king, Gol D. Roger.

With a solid CV, the pirate has been known since the beginning of the manga since we were introduced to him in the East Blue saga. Without forgetting that it is from him that Luffy gets his straw hat and therefore his famous nickname, but also his thirst for adventure and freedom. However, he rarely appears in the story, although each passage is significant enough to make him one of the most important characters in the series. Especially since chapter 1054 confirmed that he was also interested in One Piece… except that a detail could well have been overlooked when the pirate announced that he wanted to look for the treasure.

What did Shanks mean in chapter 1054 of One Piece ?

According to a Japanese native on X/Twitter, “the kanji in this scene is used to mean “take by force” (奪う), suggesting that Shanks plans to steal the One Piece from its rightful owner. He probably knows who the real owner is, which explains the choice of this term.

But the chapter also implies that Shanks waited for Luffy to truly awaken his Devil Fruit in its true form before taking action. The captain also met the members of the Gorosei and mentioned a certain pirate, something all the stranger since we know that he was the one who stole Luffy’s devil fruit from them.

In the end, Luffy accidentally ate the fruit, eventually gaining the same powers as Joy Boy. But it seems that things turned out as they were supposed to, whether intentional or not: the simple presence of an Emperor in a small village in the East Blue was already surprising, but the coincidences between the Straw Hats of Luffy and Joy Boy or their desire for freedom continues to accumulate.

Also, in Oden’s flashback, Roger says something to Shanks that hasn’t been revealed yet. Many elements concerning Shanks therefore confirm that his objective was never obvious from the start. Does he plan to steal the treasure to help Luffy achieve a goal even greater than the simple quest for One Piece?

Whether his desire to take the treasure by force is selfish or not is not yet certain. Shanks has never seemed particularly evil, but he’s still a pirate. And Eiichiro Oda always has the possibility to add twists and turns to the captain’s story in One Piece.
