Sony predicts drop in sales in the second half of the cycle

If Sony's third fiscal quarter report, on the one hand, indicates a huge success for the PlayStation 5, the company also treats the future of the console with caution.

Hiroki Totoki, president, COO and CFO of the group, highlights that the device is reaching the second half of its cycle and, therefore, there should be a gradual drop in sales. He talked about this when presenting the financial report data (via Gematsu).

“Regarding the PlayStation 5 hardware, which will enter its fifth year since launch, partially due to its entry into the second half of the console cycle, we intend to optimize sales with a greater focus on balancing profits, so we anticipate a gradual reduction in unit sales from the next fiscal year,” he said

On the other hand, the expectation is that the number of game sales will continue to increase. After all, the base of PS5 consoles is getting bigger and bigger.

“We expect third-party software sales to continue to gradually expand due to the expansion of the PlayStation 5 installed base and the high level of user engagement. In network services, we expect subscribers to be at similar levels to this fiscal year or slightly less due to the impact of the price review we implemented this fiscal year, but we expect sales to expand gradually due to a shift towards attractive premium services.” , he completed.

It is also worth remembering that, despite not having been made official, an upgrade to the PlayStation 5, the PS5 Pro, could be announced and launched later this year.

Sony could reach 80 million PS5 sold by March 2025

Japan's Games Industry shared an analysis from Toyo Securities regarding the commercial performance of the PS5. According to the data, there is a good chance that the console will surpass the mark of 80 million units sold by the end of the current fiscal year — which ends on March 31, 2025.
