Star Wars: this abandoned film is back, fans are doubtful

on

As the Star Wars universe continues to expand under the leadership of Lucasfilm and Disney, fans of the franchise recently learned that the film Rogue Squadron, which we thought was abandoned, is actually still relevant today according to director Patty Jenkins. News that has not convinced everyone on the networks.

First announced in 2020, the film Rogue Squadron was initially due to be released in theaters in 2023. A project which remained shrouded in mysteries for a long time and of which we knew few details, except that it was going to be taken care of by Patty Jenkins, the director of Wonder Woman (2017) and Wonder Woman 1984 (2020).

But in September 2022, Disney removed the film from their release schedule, suggesting that the project had potentially been abandoned, or at least left on hold for an indefinite period. The American filmmaker then explained at that time that she was taken by the development of the third part of the saga Wonder Woman.

However, many Star Wars fans were eager to discover this feature film, which was supposed to follow a new generation of Rebel Army fighters, led to become the fiercest pilots in the galaxy. And while we thought that the film Rogue Squadron was nothing more than ancient history, this recent statement from Jenkins gives hope to fans of the 1998 video game of the same name.

Jenkins and Rogue Squadron returning to Disney?

Indeed, it was during a recent interview with the Talking Pictures podcast that Jenkins revealed that she was returning to Disney to work on the film Rogue Squadron. She then explained that with the big shakeup carried out by James Gunn and Peter Safran at DC Studios, the production of Wonder Woman 3 had therefore fallen into the water. This is why she finally returned to Lucasfilm, with whom she signed an agreement “at the same time as the strike was happening”.

After this confirmation of his return to Rogue Squadron, this therefore sparked strong reactions from fans on the networks. And if some are more than delighted with the return of the project, others seem to be a little more skeptical, as evidenced by the various comments that can be found on this subject on X (formerly Twitter).

“The question is will this project ever come out, because we've been through this with 6 Star Wars projects so far, and they've never come out.”

“There are a limited number of times Disney can announce new projects. Now they are announcing shelved projects”

“I will believe it when I see it come to fruition. In other words, more information, a trailer and an expected release date.”

A new feature film which is therefore added to the list of upcoming Star Wars films announced by Lucasfilm and Disney and which, we hope, will manage to generate a little more enthusiasm among the public. Because lately, Star Wars film projects no longer seem to be as eagerly awaited by fans, like these first returns following the announcement of The Mandalorian & Grogu.
