Episode 3 of The Acolyte : Osha and Mae divide the Aniseya convent

Sixteen years before episode 2, episode 3 of The Acolyte introduces us to Mae and Osha in a forbidden area of their home planet, Brendok.

We quickly understand that Mae wants to respect the rules and intends to follow in their mothers’ footsteps to become a witch thanks to “ascension”, a ritual which will soon take place. But Osha’s curiosity pushes her to wonder about what could await her elsewhere and the small dread of committing to the convent for good. While Mother Koril comes to look for them and scold them for venturing into such a place, we see Sol busy spying on them.

The girls are brought back to Mother Aniseya, and viewers learn that she and Koril are the true parents of the twins, who appear to have been conceived in part through “Thread,” another term to describe the Force. Emphasizing advantage in numbers, Aniseya tries to teach the girls a lesson. Mae adapts wonderfully to training, but Osha does not. The disagreement results in an argument and the twins are sent back to their room.

The Jedi try to recruit Osha and Mae

During the ascension ceremony, Osha does not have time to pronounce all of her vows to become a witch of the convent: because the Jedi show up at the same time.

The ceremony begins with an explanation from Mother Aniseya, who reviews the history of the convent. This is an opportunity for the public to discover that witches, who manipulate the Force in their own way, are in reality hunted and in exile. Once on Brendok, they chose to live in secret and in groups to perpetuate their traditions.

Mae is more than ready to make a promise to remain secret and loyal to the convent, and Aniseya transposes powers into her head, a gesture that leaves a white mark on the girl’s forehead – the same one that allowed us to distinguish the twins in previous episodes of The Acolyte. Osha, on the other hand, does not have time to receive the same treatment: the ceremony is interrupted by the arrival of Indara, Torbin, Kelnacca and Sol.

First hidden by members of the convent, the twins end up being spotted by the Jedi. The latter then demand to be able to test them with the Force. After bringing Torbin to his knees, Aniseya releases her grip to comply, aware that High Republic law allows Masters to behave in this way.

The twins argue and everything goes wrong in episode 3 of The Acolyte

To avoid having to say goodbye to her daughters, Mother Aniseya advises them to lie during the Jedi test, but nothing will go as planned.

If Mae is determined not to leave the convent, it is different for Osha. The little girl gives in to the insistence of her sister who forces her to promise to lie during the test. But Osha does not share his point of view on the uniqueness of the twins, supposed to be the same person in two bodies. Faced with Sol’s kindness, she breaks down and admits to not having been honest.

When she leaves the ship, Mae immediately guesses that her sister passed the test and is furious. But when Osha confides in her mother, the latter is more understanding and promises to try to offer her daughter the opportunity to realize her dream of becoming a Jedi. But Mae is against the idea of seeing her twin leave.

She then locks her sister in their room and sets fire to the floor to prevent her from leaving, without realizing that she is endangering her twin and the entire convent. The flames will unfortunately spread and destroy the witches’ refuge.

But Osha manages to escape from her room. She will be intercepted by Sol, who has come to save the little girls while the rest of the witches have been wiped out. However, he will only manage to protect Osha, Mae being stuck on the other side of a bridge on the verge of destruction. When the little one falls, Osha and Sol deduce that she is dead.

Osha will then be welcomed on the Jedi ship by Sol and Indara, who will have the difficult task of explaining to her what has just happened. She is accepted as a padawan by Sol, and everyone disappears, unaware that Mae actually survived.
