Summary :

Wyll in Baldur's Gate 3

The best subclass for Wyll

When you recruit Wyll as a companion or select him as an origin character, the latter is a Occultist with the subclass Fiend.

On the lore side, it's hard to imagine Wyll using any other subclass given the nature of his evil boss. In addition, the Fiend subclass is perfectly suited to damage-oriented Occultist gameplay thanks to two major advantages:

  • The Blessing of Darkness passive, to gain temporary HP each time you kill an enemy
  • Access to some of the best offensive spells in the game, like Fireball, Wall of Fire and Cone of Cold

The best features for Wyll

To make Wyll a war machine, you will need to reallocate his characteristics in order to optimize everything a little. If you're not sure how to go about it, check out our respec guide in Baldur's Gate 3.

An Occultist must have characteristics perfectly suited to his role, namely inflicting as much damage as possible, but also maintaining the concentration of his spells, and obviously staying alive:

  • Charisma (16 at level 1): The casting characteristic of the Occultist. Raising this score is going to be one of the priorities of the build. Charisma is also the preferred stat for dialogue, making Wyll an excellent frontman for an adventuring group.
  • Dexterity (16 at level 1): Dexterity is very important for an Occultist. It increases his Armor Class and therefore his survival, improves his initiative so that he eliminates priority targets as early as possible, and allows him to more easily avoid enemy offensive spells.
  • Constitution (14 at level 1): Constitution is a primary characteristic for all classes. Indeed, it considerably increases the characters' HP. For an Occultist it is also essential to maintain the concentration of important spells.
  • Strength (10 at level 1): A characteristic of little use for an Occultist. However, it allows you to increase the jumping distance and the portable charge.
  • Wisdom (10 at level 1): Wisdom is a very useful characteristic for various saving throws as well as for Perception and Survival throws. However, we can hardly afford to invest points in it
  • Intelligence (8 at level 1): Few primary skills rely on Intelligence, and your Wyll is not really intended for casting Wizard spells. This is the opportunity to remove all the points from this stat to better invest them elsewhere.

The best spells, cantrips and passives for Wyll

Here is a reduced list of spells, cantrips and passives that constitute the heart of this Occultist build. While you will have many other tools at your disposal in combat and for exploration, these few elements will largely define your gameplay.

  • Occult discharge (Occultist level 1): Unquestionably the best cantrip in the game, Occult Discharge is the signature of this class, and its main damage tool. At levels 5 and 11, the cantrip evolves and allows you to send an additional ray of energy each time. In addition, the effectiveness of Occult Discharge is greatly increased by Occult Summons.
  • Evil spell (Occultist level 1): This Occultist spell forms your main combo with Occult Discharge. Cast Hex on an enemy for a Bonus Action, and it will take an additional 1D6 points of damage from your attacks. Obviously, a higher level Eldritch Discharge can activate Hex's damage several times in a single turn. Hex also allows you to impose a disadvantage on a saving throw: it's up to you to choose the right characteristic according to the needs of your team.
  • Eldritch Summon – Rending Discharge (Occultist Level 2): Rending Discharge adds your Charisma modifier to the damage of your Eldritch Discharge. This is a considerable damage bonus for the Occultist.
  • Eldritch Summon – Repulsive Discharge (Occultist level 2): This improvement allows your Occult Discharge to push back the target(s) hit. Thanks to this invocation, the Occultist is one of the classes best suited to abusing the verticality of Baldur's Gate 3 to make enemies fall into the void.
  • Summon Imp (Occultist level 3): By choosing the Chain Pact, you can summon a familiar that will follow you wherever you go. We strongly advise you to call the Imp. He is capable of flying, turning invisible and inflicting significant damage.
  • Fireball (Fiendy Occultist level 5): An iconic Dungeons and Dragons spell, as simple as it is powerful. Fireball will allow you to inflict huge damage in a wide area.
  • Hadar's Hunger (Occultist level 5): Less attractive than Fireball on paper, this spell is nonetheless no less powerful. In addition to inflicting damage at the start and end of enemies' turns, it slows them down and blinds them. Wisely placed in a bottleneck, Hadar's Hunger alone marks the end of a fight.
  • Wall of Fire (Occultist level 7): Wall of Fire generates a thick line of flames on the ground, and you choose its precise location and angle. This spell can cover a huge part of the battlefield and scorch any enemy that gets too close.

The best equipment for Wyll

Wyll seeks to inflict as much damage as possible, especially with the Eldritch Discharge cantrip which is his main offensive tool.

Your priority should therefore be to find items that improve the effectiveness of cantrips. There are a good handful of them in Baldur's Gate 3. We particularly recommend the excellent Chargespell staff, which you can select after rescuing Florrick in Act 1.

As for armor, you can wear light armor, but also opt for clothing after unlocking Invocation: Shadow Armor, which will give you free access to the Mage Armor spell. Several dresses are particularly interesting for this build, making the choice of this Invocation very interesting.

Wyll build progress

Now that you have understood the components of a good Occultist build for Wyll, here is a progression guide to help you choose your actions and your gifts at each level gained in Baldur's Gate 3.

Tips and tricks

  • Your Imp can remain invisible indefinitely. Take advantage of this asset to make him start melee combat with the most annoying enemy in the fight
  • The occultist has very few spell points, but he recovers them after each short rest. Take advantage of this advantage to systematically use your most powerful spells in combat
  • The occultist's spells are always cast at the highest spell level available. Spells like Fireball and Wall of Fire therefore remain powerful even at the very end of the game.
  • Use Repulsor Blast and its phenomenal thrust ability to make your enemies fall into chasms
  • If you want to take a short rest but have one Occultist spell point remaining, consider casting Agathys Armor to benefit from temporary HP in the next fight
  • After having unlocked the few essential Occult Invocations, do not hesitate to use the following Invocations to unlock spells like Communication with Animals or Communication with the Dead
  • The Hex + Eldritch Discharge combo is so powerful that it will remain your tool of choice for inflicting single-target damage, even at the end of the adventure
