The Last of Us Part II was almost undermined by Uncharted

The Last of Us Part II's development was almost impacted by another major Naughty Dog project. While the sequel to Ellie's saga was in the early stages, Uncharted 4: A Thief's End mobilized a large number of developers to complete.

In an interview released by the documentary Grounded II, designer Emilia Schatz confirmed that the games were in production at the same time. With that, Nathan Drake's adventure was “reaching its limit” and practically everyone in the studio focused completely on it.

As Naughty Dog doesn't usually work on two big games simultaneously, The Last of Us Part II was almost harmed by the decision. And as if that weren't enough, Neil Druckmann insisted on releasing a trailer for the game before completing Uncharted 4.

“During the entire production period on Uncharted 4, that was all I could think about. I invested a lot in Uncharted 4, but the day we finished it, I went straight back to that trailer to release it,” said Druckmann, suggesting he had nightmares about the leaked video.

Production of The Last of Us Part II and Uncharted reinforces reports of crunch

This would also reinforce Naughty Dog's new strategy of avoiding crunch. During the development of The Last of Us Part II, reports from employees indicate that the company applied extreme working conditions. However, according to the studio, the lesson has been learned. Click here to learn more.
