‘F— you, it’s-a me, Mario!’: Final Fantasy 16 voice actor applies for Mario role and swears more in 40 seconds than Mario in a lifetime
If Mario were British and in a really bad mood, maybe he could sound like this…
The well-known voice of Super Mario is quitting the job: Charles Martinet is stepping down from this role after more than 30 years. Of course, that means the internet is now racking its brains over who might be a good fit to do it instead.
A very special person also comes forward with an audition and a really surprising approach. Ben Starr (Clive from Final Fantasy 16) either doesn’t take it at all or takes it too seriously.
Ben Starr delivers the best (and not-extremely-rated) application
With a lot of humour: There is no question that these recordings should not be taken too seriously. Because Ben Starr doesn’t sound like Super Mario at all and doesn’t disguise his deep, beautiful voice a bit. But it’s best to see and hear for yourself first:

The most impressive thing about it is how serious Ben Starr can keep at it. But maybe he just cut out his fits of laughter that made him burst into tears. In any case, the result of this application is really, really absurd and could hardly be funnier.
The reactions are accordingly and not only amuses people, but also makes some get creative. For example, it’s really nice how Ben Starr’s Mario version was incorporated into his actual Final Fantasy 16 role here:

So if Nintendo should ever rethink and Super Mario as a gritty, gritty movie à la The Dark Knight or Sin City, they’d have the perfect man for the role – sorry, Chris Pratt. If the Mario game after next is more of a Max Payne, Ben Starr could work very well too.
However, we think that’s extremely unlikely given the latest announced game Super Mario Bros Wonder look at. In it, Toad, Peach, Mario and Co. experience their adventures again in 2D and there is a new power-up that turns Mario into an elephant.
