Forspoken Review

Forspoken is a game long awaited by many players, including this server, I must admit that since I saw the first trailer of the game I felt a crush, “This is my kind of game”. I felt identified instantly. But, since not everything that is seen in the trailers is what we receive in the final product, I did not take it so personally and now that we have the final game. I tell you my review.

In Forspoken you play as the main character Frey Holland, a young woman from New York City, who has gotten into trouble for her lifestyle. Finding himself in trouble, for unknown reasons he ends up falling into another dimension, in the mystical land of Athia, this is a medieval world full of magic, imaginary creatures and everything you can imagine that this type of world has.

And so, this is where our adventure begins. This world is, let’s call it this way, ‘Infected’ by a kind of supernatural force that our protagonist calls ‘The Tear’, this darkness, turns all the beings it touches into a kind of zombie. Whether human or animal. And here comes our protagonist who is touched by it and is not affected, and she discovers that in this world she can use magical powers, since she is linked with a strange bracelet which seems to be a person trapped inside this object. He guides her, she teaches him how to use her new powers and sometimes serves simply to discuss ideas.

Since you are the only person who seems unable to be affected by this Tear, you will be in charge of being that person who goes out of town to do what has to be done and get to know the outside world in order to understand what is happening and look for the way to fix it.

Very early in history you will discover that this world, Athia, is governed by some very powerful magical beings, Las Tantas, which, in ancient times, were faithful protectors of Athia, always protecting its inhabitants, but with the passing of time, something happens and they were corrupting their souls, to the point that it is believed that El Garro is directly related to Las Tantas. And well, here we have our main enemies, some very ancient and powerful beings, who will want to kill you just because you came to their lands and this apparently means a great inconvenience for them.

This story is definitely more basic than I expected, nothing new, the tyrant who doesn’t care about his city, the rich who reject you and the poor who believe you are a hero and their only hope. Something quite curious is that Forspoken carries feminism in her being: our main character is a woman, the main one of Athia’s council is a woman, the most powerful villain is a woman, there are several important characters in the game that Frey has a bond with and they are also women. Characters with some value in New York are women. I have nothing against this, because I love games with female protagonists, but in this case it’s so much that it feels a bit forced.

The gameplay, this is the most salvageable part of the game, is quite simple, the gameplay is completely based on magic. On PS5 you have two types of magic, one main and one secondary. The main one, you use it in R2, and if you press R1 you can select the different magic that your character has, these magic evolve and add new magic due to a skill growth tree system.

If you hold R2, you’ll be using magic exponentially. The same goes for secondary magic that is used with L2 and L1. only that this is a passive magic, which will help you to have better results in your fights.

Passive magic consumes MP, and there comes a point where you accumulate all the MP and you can use a kind of special attack, this is by pressing L2 + R2.

Our character increases in level, as you gain experience, you also have a parkour ability that is quite interesting. We can use it in a limited way, but it is useful and it is quite cool.

We also have a craft system, where we create things that will help us recover our HP, improve our skills, ETC.

In Forspoken we can learn a lot of magic, quite varied and to be honest I like the originality of everything. For me, this is the best part of the game and what keeps me interested. There are all kinds of monsters. These appear in waves and until you kill the last of them, you do not gain experience. In the open world there are all kinds of places, from shrines to rest, to places where you enter and are faced with a considerable amount of enemies, increasingly powerful and when you fight the last one, you manage to get an item that helps you become more powerful. strong.

I’m playing this game on its standard difficulty and it’s pretty easy for me, dying is a bit difficult in this game if you’re somewhat skilled, and this is definitely not something I like.

Graphically Forspoken is simply bad, the textures are bad, the detail of the characters, the faces, I don’t understand what they express, sometimes the game looks like it’s in the middle of development and no, it’s a completely finished game. This tarnishes the gameplay a lot, since the magic so elegant and so original, is quite a duty because it does not have graphics to support it.

The settings, Athia, everything is gloomy, colorless, with very little detail. No matter where I am in the game, I feel like I’m in the same place, due to the lack of attention to detail in each setting. Definitely, I expected much more in this section.

The dubbing of voices I cannot say that it is good or bad. I think this one is affected by the graphics as well, because sometimes a character tells you something in a specific tone of voice, but you see his face and he tells you something completely different. And this creates distraction.

The soundtrack and the sound effects are good, I can say that they remain very consistent with all circumstances and they convey the feeling.

At the performance level, I have my reservations, I feel that the game is very limited on many occasions, there are even moments where you cannot move the camera, only move forward and I suspect that these limitations have a lot to do with performance. And of course, many bugs that I have found. But since it’s a totally new open world, well, I’ll let it go.

Forspoken is definitely uninteresting, with unpolished graphics, very plain textures, and an open world with very few colors and giving us the impression that everything is very gloomy. Its rather simple and predictable story definitely does not impress us, perhaps because it is the typical story that we have seen and played dozens of times. Definitely the most salvageable thing about this game is its gameplay, which despite being quite simple, keeps us hooked and makes the game somewhat tolerable.
