A recent survey among 2300 video game developers revealed that 91% of them see toxicity from players like big problem for the entire industry. 40% of respondents with harassment personally met. We further learn that most of these negative experiences they have women and developers who identify with some community, such as LGBT+.
The information came from a survey State of the Game 2023which is a regular part of the conference GDC. One of the survey participants sees it as a possible solution setting clear and public boundaries and appealing to the community as such. Some form of education is an absolute must, as large development firms are said to be unaware of the real impact that these toxic players have on other members of their fan base. Those concerned can relatively easily encourage others to inappropriate speeches, including those players who would never have thought of it themselves.
As part of the survey, for example, it was also said that large companies they never ban players until this practice starts bringing them money. Which shows us regular players beautifully corporate culturewhich must prevail there… However, the labor unions still require a ban for those players who seriously violate the principles of decent behavior towards the creators – for example death threats, this is also said to be unfortunately very common. According to one community manager, it is necessary to ask players for their opinion, which should be taken into account, but a player should never think that they are “part of the family” and have a say in absolutely everything.
The vast majority of the development world are white men. Striving for greater the involvement of minorities and women but they are especially on the rise recently. This was evaluated very positively by the vast majority of those questioned.
Further, purely work topics were discussed. Most respondents think so Epic Games has the best chance to succeed in the field metaverse. However, almost half of the respondents (45%) are of the opinion that the metaverse will never reach the level that is currently presented to us as a “goal”. It is also interesting that 75% of the respondents he doesn’t show the slightest interest about technology blockchain and 56% of them are categorically against this technology. The prevailing opinion is that it is considerable unethical.
The final points that the survey revealed are that most developers are trying to implement more into their games functions for the disabled. It is also being put further and further greater emphasis on ecological sustainability during development.
This year’s survey was already the eleventh of its kind. It is implemented every year. What is your opinion on the mentioned topics? Did any of the results surprise you?
