The well-known MMORPG RuneScape was banned on X.com for a short time because the developers made a little joke 15 years ago.

Which MMORPG is it?

  • At 23 years old, RuneScape is one of the oldest and most famous MMORPGs. It was created by the English development studio Jagex and released in 2001.
  • Runescape is a fantasy MMORPG set in a pseudo-medieval world where players use sword and magic to fight various enemies and explore the world.
  • The MMORPG has received numerous updates over the years, which is why the game “Old School RuneScape2” was released in the meantime, reflecting the state of the original MMORPG in 2007.

Twitter bans RuneScape account for a joke

What's the ban all about? A few days ago the news went around on social networks that the official RuneScape account had been banned from X.com/Twitter.

A screenshot of the “This account does not exist” message was shared on Reddit. The message can be seen if you want to access a deleted or blocked account, for example via an old link. After deletion, the account itself can no longer be found using the search function.

The RuneScape account has over 320,000 followers on the platform and regularly posts or shares information and content about the famous MMORPG. RuneScape has now been unbanned on X.com and can be accessed normally.

Why was RuneScape banned? RuneScape developer Jagex's communications manager told English-language magazine PC Gamer that the account was banned because X.com thought it was created by someone who was under 13 when the account was created.

She further reveals that the developers made a little joke when they created the account in 2009 and stated the game's release date in 2001 as the date of birth. X.com recorded that the account was created by an 8-year-old child.

There X.com If it can only be used by people aged 13 or over, this would be a violation of the platform's guidelines.

Jagex, the studio behind RuneScape, has changed hands several times in the past, most recently in 2021. On February 9, 2024, CVC Capital Partners and Haveli Investments announced that they would buy Jagex. The Cartyle Group previously owned the studio. However, the exact details of the deal are still under wraps. Read the whole story here: Europe's most important MMORPG company is officially being sold
