The next games should make this even better

Elden Ring is considered one of the best games of all time. Despite this, lead developer Hidetaka Miyazaki is not completely satisfied with the final product. For the next game, he wants to take inspiration from another game by FromSoftware.

What about Elden Ring? FromSoftware’s big open-world game was released in 2022 and won numerous awards. It is considered by fans to be a milestone and the current highlight of the studio’s catalog. On Metacritic, Elden Ring has 96 points in the critics’ rating and a user score of 8.0.

However, lead developer Hidetaka Miyazaki believes there is still room for improvement. Elden Ring is not perfect and there is room for improvement, he believes.

He explained what exactly he wants to change in an interview with Game Informer. An earlier game from the studio is supposed to be a model for any new titles. At least when it comes to the combat system.

“Sekiro was a turning point”

What does Hidetaka Miyazaki say? In the history of the Soulsborne games, one title in particular stands out for the Japanese developer: Sekiro.

The game is a bit out of the ordinary and is different in some ways from Dark Souls, Bloodborne or Elden Ring. The combat system in particular is more like a rhythm game than actual combat.

For this reason, Sekiro is very challenging, especially at the beginning. Only when it “clicks” in the player’s head do fluid duels with tough opponents emerge. Miyazaki now describes Sekiro as a “turning point” in the development history of FromSoftware.

After the slow fights in Dark Souls and the somewhat faster ones in Bloodborne, he would have liked an even more fluid and active system. In Sekiro, Miyazaki came quite close to his vision. But he also says:

“Personally, I think there’s another level where we can sharpen things up and refine the mechanics even more.”

What does this mean for new games? The design philosophy from Sekiro will be continued in future titles. The fights could be even faster and therefore more fluid. In other words, faster than in Elden Ring, which was scaled back a bit in terms of pace and seemed more like a mix of the previous games.

The mistakes that Miyazaki believes he made in Elden Ring will be corrected in a new game. He says he has not yet completed the “ideal fantasy role-playing game”.

Some aspects that weren’t perfect in Elden Ring could still be refined. It’s still unclear whether these high standards will be implemented in a possible Elden Ring 2 or a completely new title.

First of all, the release of the major expansion “Shadow of the Erdtree” is due on June 21, 2024. The DLC is the biggest the studio has ever made and will keep you glued to the screen for around 40 hours. It was already clear when we started playing: the bosses are once again the tough highlight.
