Robbie Coltrane, who played half-giant Rubeus Hagrid in the Harry Potter saga, has died. Daniel Radcliffe or Emma Watson paid tribute to him.
He will have been one of the emblematic characters of the Harry Potter franchise in the cinema. Robbie Coltrane, aka Rubeus Hagrid, has died aged 72.
Robbie Coltrane, Hagrid in Harry Potter, is no more
Fans of the Harry Potter film saga are in mourning. Robbie Coltrane, the half-giant Rubeus Hagrid who appeared throughout the films up to the latest Deathly Hallows, has died in a hospital in Scotland. The causes were not revealed by his agency, but a few years ago he had to fight severe osteoarthritis which forced him to move around in a wheelchair.
In a moving passage from the documentary Harry Potter 20th anniversary: return to Hogwarts, Robbie Coltrane spoke about the fact that even after his death, his character of Hagrid would have the chance to live forever and cross the generations.
The legacy of these movies is that…my kids will show them to their kids. So you can easily see them again in 50 years. I will unfortunately not be here, but Hagrid, yes.
The words of the actors of the saga
Those who were by his side, who grew up with him, like Daniel Radcliffe (Harry Potter), Emma Watson (Hermione) or even Bonnie Wright (Ginny), commented on this disappearance.
Robbie was the funniest uncle I’ve ever had, but most importantly, he was extremely caring and compassionate to me, both as a child and as an adult. His talent was so immense that it made sense that he played a giant – he could fill any space with his genius. Robbie, if I ever have the opportunity to be as kind on set as you were to me, I promise you I’ll do it on your behalf and in your memory. Know how much I adore and admire you. I will really miss your sweetness, your nicknames, your warmth, your laughter and your hugs. You made us a family. Know that this is what you were for us. There was no better Hagrid. It was a joy to be Hermione thanks to you.

Robbie was one of the funniest people I’ve met and he made us laugh constantly when we were kids on set. I particularly remember him when, on Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban, we sheltered from the torrential rain for hours in Hagrid’s cabin and he told us stories and jokes to cheer us up. He was an amazing actor and a lovely man.
I am heartbroken by the death of Robbie Coltrane. Hagrid was my favorite character! Robbie has masterfully portrayed the warmth, sense of belonging and unconditional love for his students as well as his magical creatures, from Hagrid. Thank you for all those laughs. I miss you Robbie. I send love to your family.
