As a rule, new series and seasons lose viewers after their premiere from episode 2 – sometimes even drastically. But not House of the Dragon! The first spin-off of Game of Thrones was able to trump its own numbers again in its second episode.

The Rogue Prince switched on. Episode 2 trumps the start of the series
The Heirs of the Dragon around 200,000 Game of Thrones fans who want to learn more about the history of the Targaryens directly.
Since the start of House of the Dragon on August 21st, however, the number of viewers of the very first episode has of course also increased. The Heirs of the Dragon now has a whopping 25 million viewers – an increase of 15 million viewers who are watching the episode for the first time or are repeating it.
For direct comparison: Seasons 6, 7 and 8 of Game of Thrones attracted 25.7, 32.8 and 44.2 million series fans, respectively. That House of the Dragon is fast approaching those numbers right from the start bodes well for the future. So it’s no wonder that HBO has already officially renewed House of the Dragon for a second season:

At this point it should perhaps be mentioned again that House of the Dragon not only broke in-house records with its premiere. Episode 1 reached more viewers in the US, Europe, Latin America, the Middle East and Africa than any previous HBO series. It was also the most successful series debut of 2022.
This significant success should also ensure more of George RR Martin’s Westeros stories are told in serial form on Game of Thrones and House of the Dragon. HBO is planning seven more spin-offs in mid-2021 – however, it is currently not known what the status of their respective progress is.
