Is Counter-Strike Global Offensive 2 Coming? Hints are circulating the internet about a sequel to Source Engine 2, but it’s complex
Sometimes I forget that CS:GO is almost 11 years old. Valve’s shooter has become a benchmark and a pillar of the genre, and every day it is even more popular if possible. Still, in an industry littered with sequels and technological breakthroughs, it’s not strange to wonder where is Counter Strike: Global Offensive 2, or a sequel of another kind, and a leak seems to point to it. But what is going on with these games and the Source Engine 2 engine?
Let’s start at the beginning: filtration. There’s been a lot of talk for a while now about the possibility of upgrading CS:GO to the latest version of the Half-Life 2 engine, CS:Source and GOand the titles of Portal. The community has been researching and throwing out theories, even going so far as to look closely at the game developers’ social media banners. All the alarms went off with an update of the NVIDIA drivers.
Released on February 28, the new controllers of the green team were the ones that put all fans of Valve’s FPS on red alert. Reddit user DAOWAce discovered that the operating profiles included in them alluded to two new, suspicious executables: “csgos2.exe” and “cs2.exe”. As if this were not enough, the container profile is called counter strike 2. This put the entire community to theorize, were we facing an update and, in addition, a new game from the legendary franchise?
On the one hand, csgos2.exe makes a clear allusion to the version of CS:GO Source Engine 2. The long-awaited graphic update of the multiplayer title seems to be closer than ever. Despite being a piece of news, all eyes were focused on the second and surprising executable. What is cs2.exe? Can this be a reboot or a new installment? number 2 cheatsYes, because this would be the 5th edition of the game.
Although everyone has been quick to theorize, it seems that the reality is a little less shocking than it seemed. As discovered by Aquarius, a Counter Strike developer, fan and theoristthe cs2.exe file is irrelevant, in the case of a junk file which could date from 2014. As for the profile name, the theory is that “Counter-Strike” was already in use (most likely due to the classic version of the game), so from Valve they opted for adding a 2 in the end.
Although all of this may seem somewhat disappointing, you have to consider the consequences of releasing a new Counter-Strike in today’s market. Successful video games as a service are absolute kings in their market, and Valve’s FPS is no exception. Release a sequel could mean not only divide the communitybut to make many users lose the skins of their weapons, something around which a literally millionaire market with the years.
On the other hand, this news is not without excitement. Along with the fateful Artifact, Dota 2 and Half-Life: Alyx, Counter-Strike: Global Offensive would be one of the first video games to use The new technology from Valve, updating, at least as far as the visual is concerned, drastically.
Considering that this would also have an effect on the game’s minimum and recommended requirements, we don’t know if Valve will opt for keep both versions of CS:GO at the same time (hence the use of a new EXE), or if we will see the old one being discarded in favor of modernizing and supporting only the new phase of the company’s flagship multiplayer shooter. For now, we will have to wait to see an official announcement, in addition to the modus operandi and the release date for this update.
