It was seen coming, and even so it is sad news: this year’s E3 is permanently canceled

Of course, 2023 is not being the best year for the biggest video game fair in history (or at least it was until now). The E3 has suffered blow after blow to see how all its greatest allies decided not go this year, but the latter is already the definitive one. This year, the fair will not return as promised, and the reason is what would be expected.

What would E3 be without Sony, Microsoft, Nintendo, Ubisoft, SEGA and Tencent? The answer is “nothing”, and that is what is happening right now. After having confirmed all these big companies that they would not attend, while other titanic ones had not yet said anything, ESA and ReedPop have decided to make the logical move and announce the cancellation of the eventat least for this year.

Sources close to the Esports Extrasportal have confirmed that this edition will not be held. Through an email sent to ESA members, we have learned that what has led to this cancellation is lack of interest by the companies to make it worth carrying out the titanic event.

Kyle Marsden-Kish, vice president of ReedPop, has issued the following statements: “It was a difficult decision […] but we had to do what was right for the industry and for E3. We appreciate and understand that interested companies were not going to have demos ready, and that resource challenges made being at E3 this summer difficult. an obstacle they could not overcome“says the executive.

With only a couple of months notice and with so many giants absent or missing, it was an open secret that this possibility existed. Even so, we cease to be a strange scenario for those of us who have spent decades following the news of the video game and waiting for all lectures and trailers.

The ramifications of this decision are yet to be seen. Are we facing a specific cursed edition and will we see the great fair return in next years? is this a ultimate paradigm shift What will promote individual events over large meeting spaces? Is the physical format dead forever? All these questions will have an answer, but it will very surely take months, and even years, to clarify all the unknowns.
