During Summer Game Fest, publisher Focus Entertainment and developer Saber Interactive revealed John Carpenter’s Toxic Commando, a new co-op FPS video game inspired by 1980s action horror movies.

John Carpenter, the iconic director behind movies like Halloween, The Thing, The Fog, and Escape From New York, collaborated with Focus and Saber on the project, which is due out for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC next year, though an exact date has not been announced.

The game is set in the near future, after an experimental attempt to harness the power of the Earth’s core that ends in the release of “the God of Slime”, an eldritch abomination that turns the earth to slime and the living to undead monsters. Up to four players can team up to fight massive hordes of mutated monsters and eradicate the supernatural outbreak. The game uses Saber’s Swarm engine, which also powered World War Z: Aftermath and the upcoming Space Marine 2.

In a joint statement with the disclosure, Carpenter said: “It’s exciting to collaborate on a new game with Focus and Saber. Look, I really like shooting zombies. They keep telling me that they are called ‘the infected’. Please. They explode very well and there are a lot of them. people will love this game“.
