John Leguizamo reveals that “Disney was not happy” with Super Mario Bros. from 1993
The Super Mario Bros. Movie It opened in theaters earlier this month, and it’s been sweeping the box office. The animated movie has received mixed reactions from critics, but it’s easily a much bigger hit than the Super Mario Bros. film that was released in 1993.
That movie was directed by Rocky Morton and Annabel Jankel and starred Bob Hoskins as Mario and John Leguizamo as Luigi, and became known as one of the worst video game adaptations of all time. As it turns out, gaming fans weren’t the only ones who took issue with the movie. Several weeks before the film began shooting, Disney bought the distribution rights and demanded significant rewrites.
In a recent interview with GQ, Leguizamo revealed that Disney was not happy with certain aspects of the film.
“[Los directores] they had this dark vision that Disney didn’t agree with, so there was this whole butt that was amazing. That party scene? All of those were strippers from North Carolina that they put on set and had them in the most revealing clothes and costumes. Disney was not happy… They had to cut a lot, blow, CGI with whatever bad technology they had in the past.”
The movie Super Mario Bros.. it is now playing in theaters.
