ASUS presented a huge curved monitor at Computex in Taiwan. It is reminiscent of the well-known Odyssey series from Samsung. The community is positively surprised.
Monitors have been getting bigger and bigger for a few years, some gamers even buy a large TV directly and connect their gaming PC to it. Last year, Samsung caused a stir with an ingenious monitor.
Now ASUS has introduced a 49-inch QD OLED monitor. The technical details sound promising at first, but some gamers are already worried that the device could become very expensive.
49-inch QD OLED monitor with 4K resolution and 144 Hz
Asus showed off a new 49-inch QD OLED monitor at Computex. The new display comes with a resolution of 5,120 x 1,440 pixels. You can imagine this as if you put two WQHD monitors (1440p) side by side. ASUS relies on 1,800R curvature so that the user of the monitor has everything in view.
However, there is a weakness in the technical details compared to the competition: the QD-OLED model “only” comes with 144 Hz. The Odyssey Neo G9 for 2,200 euros comes with a refresh rate of 240 Hz.
What will the monitor cost? So far, ASUS has not given a price for the monitor. The Odyssey Neo G9 cost around 2,500 euros when it was released. ASUS’ new gaming monitor could cost a similar amount. For that much money, you could instead buy a powerful gaming PC with a fast graphics card.
How are the players reacting? Mostly positive. Some say that they are looking forward to the new model, even if the price is likely to be quite high. As some write (via reddit.com):
- “The specs are great, now if only they could get away from the red and black, gamer bro, plastic Ferrari aesthetic I’d be thrilled. They’ve maintained it for the last 15 years so I’m not optimistic.”
- “I’ve been waiting for something like this. Problem is, they’re going to price it outrageously high, like $4,000.”
- This is great news. I’ve been wondering when someone will release an oled version.
There are already significantly more expensive devices on the market. Another model from Samsung costs around 3,500 euros. MeinMMO introduces you to the model and explains what you get for so much money:
