Naughty Dog will not make The Last of Us: Part III or the next Uncharted
Neil Druckman has said that Naughty Dog is done with Uncharted and that the same could be said for The Last of Us, unless the studio can come up with a compelling enough story for the third part of the story.
“I know there are a lot of people wondering about The Last of Us Part 3 and whether or not it’s going to be a reality,” Druckmann told Buzzfeed. “All I can say is that we at Naughty Dog are very, very privileged that our publisher is Sony, which means that Sony funds our games, supports us, and we are owned by Sony.”
Next, Druckmann explains that Sony has never pressured the studio to release new installments of a franchise just because it was successful. Using Uncharted as an example, he says Naughty Dog was “able to put the finishing touches on that story and I can say we’re done. We’re moving on.”
“Similarly, with The Last of Us, it’s up to us whether we want to continue it or not,” he continued. Sure, a hypothetical The Last of Us: Part III would sell incredibly well, but as Druckmann says, it seems like it’s more about finding inspiration to keep the series going than continuing to make money.
For now we can console ourselves with The Last of Us television series to move on, which also confirmed on Friday that it will have a second season.
