pact to bring SSDs to the International Space Station

KIOXIA has announced that it has reached a collaboration agreement with Hewlett Packard Enterprise (HPE) to carry your KIOXIA SSDs to spacespecifically to the International Space Station. Specifically, KIOXIA Europe GmbH announced its participation in the program HPE Spaceborne Computer-2 (SBC-2).

This program will use KIOXIA SSDs as robust NAND Flash storage in HPE Edgeline and HPE ProLiant servers. All this in a test environment in which Scientific experiments will be carried out on board the International Space Station (ISS).

“The HPE Spaceborne Computer-2 is the first AI-enabled, commercial edge computing system in space to operate on the International Space Station. It is part of a mission focused on significantly advancing computing and reducing reliance on communications as space exploration continues to expand.

Astronauts will have greater autonomy by being able to process data directly on the ISS. This eliminates the need to send raw data to Earth where they are currently processed, analyzed and sent back into space.”

KIOXIA space-certified SSDs are the RM Series Value SAS and XG Series NVMe SSDs. These SSD drives thus replace mechanical hard drives. These bring improvements to the level of power, performance and reliability of outer space, since have no moving parts. In addition, they are less susceptible to electromagnetic waves and offer faster performance.

“Demonstrating that SSDs can be successfully deployed in the harsh conditions of space is a challenging prospect,” said Paul Rowan, Vice President of SSD Marketing and Engineering at KIOXIA Europe GmbH.

“The synergies that arise when KIOXIA and HPE collaborate to leverage our respective technologies are allowing us to explore exciting new possibilities. We are excited to see the future of the HPE Spaceborne Computer.” “We are pushing the limits of scientific discovery and innovation to the extreme.”

“This is an exciting time for Hewlett Packard Enterprise as we play an important role in expanding the space economy. We are delighted to continue our longstanding collaboration with KIOXIA and work together on our space computing initiatives to bring their storage solutions to the ISS.” . stressed Jim Jackson, Director of Marketing at HPE.
