Redfall had a version for PS5, but Microsoft canceled it after the acquisition of Bethesda

redfall is now an Xbox Series X/S and PC exclusive game, but it wasn’t always like this: Harvey Smith, creative director of the project at Arkane Studios, has confirmed that they were also preparing a version for PS5. He has done so in an interview with Esports ExtrasFrance in which he explained that it was Microsoft that canceled the version of redfall for console next-gen Sony after the Bethesda acquisition.

“They came in and said ‘no PS5′”

“We were acquired by Microsoft and it was a change with a capital C,” Smith says in the interview: “They came in and said ‘no PlayStation 5, we are focusing on Xbox, PC and Game Pass‘”. Microsoft’s purchase of Bethesda was announced in September 2020. The move amounted to 7.5 billion dollars and increased the number of Microsoft development studios from 15 to 23, in addition to greatly expanding the number of licenses owned by the Xbox company.

“It’s not very serious (…), one less complexity”

While this may be bad news for the PS5 user community, harvey smith does not consider that the cancellation of that version has been something completely negative for redfall: “It’s not very serious, I even think it’s a good decision. [Ayuda] to be in Game Pass and have one less platform to worry about, one less complexity”, explains the creative director in the interview before focusing on how the Xbox Game Pass subscription service can help the game grow and be best known: “Game Pass has a lot of playersit could become our biggest game thanks to 30 million, I don’t remember the exact number, of subscribers.”
